Overview

Lusail Marina Promenade is the waterfront walkway that wraps around the marina in Lusail’s Marina District, about 20 minutes north of central Doha. Palm-lined paths, benches, fountains and play areas run along the water’s edge, with yachts on one side and the new towers of Lusail on the other. Beside the marina, the curved twin Katara Towers rise over the water and dominate every view.

It is one of the best places in Qatar to watch the evening light change on a modern skyline. By day it is calm and fairly quiet; after sunset the towers light up, the fountains glow and families, joggers and couples come out for a stroll. Unlike many waterfronts in Doha, it has a lived-in feel, with cafés and residents’ buildings right on the promenade.

It suits sunset walkers, photographers, runners and cyclists, and families with children. This guide covers the best viewpoints, how to get there by tram, when to go, and how to link the promenade with the rest of Lusail and The Pearl.

The story behind Lusail Marina

Lusail is a planned city built from scratch on the coast north of Doha by the state developer Qatari Diar. The master plan covers more than 38 square kilometres and is designed for up to 450,000 people. Its name is usually traced to al wassail, a plant that once grew abundantly in the area. Administratively it lies in Al Daayen municipality, although most people think of it as part of greater Doha.

The Marina District was one of the first parts of the city to rise, with residential and office towers built around a sheltered harbour. According to Lusail’s developer, the marinas cover more than 140,000 square metres of water, and the promenade was designed to give the district a public waterfront with seating, walkways, water features, kiosks and playgrounds.

Its signature landmark, the Katara Towers, opened in 2022, in time for the FIFA World Cup, when Lusail Stadium hosted the final. Designed by Dar Al-Handasah and 211 metres tall, the two curved towers are said to evoke crossed scimitars from Qatar’s emblem, and they house the Raffles Doha and Fairmont Doha hotels. The same period saw the opening of the Lusail Tram, which now makes the promenade easy to reach without a car.

What to see and do

  1. Walk the waterfront at sunset

The promenade is made for an unhurried evening walk. Start in the southern part of the Marina District and follow the water towards the Katara Towers, watching the sky change behind the skyline. The path is flat, paved and wheelchair- and pushchair-friendly, with plenty of benches if you want to stop and watch the boats.

  2. Photograph the Katara Towers

The curved towers are the defining image of modern Lusail, and the promenade gives you views of them across the water from several angles. They are most dramatic at blue hour, just after sunset, when their lights come on and reflect in the marina. A wide lens helps, but even a phone captures the reflections well on a still evening.

  3. Look for the art and photo spots

Visit Qatar highlights a glass bridge, an “I Love Lusail” sign and an art installation of an egal, the black cord that holds the traditional Qatari headdress in place, among the photo spots in the area. Public art in Lusail is added and moved over time, so treat these as things to look out for rather than fixed stops.

  4. Run or cycle the promenade

In the cooler months, the promenade is popular with joggers and cyclists early in the morning and in the evening. It is wide and mostly traffic-free, and the sea breeze helps. Be considerate of walkers and children when it is busy.

  5. Let children play by the water

Playgrounds and fountains along the promenade make it an easy outing with children. The water features are especially lively at night, when they are lit.

  6. Eat with a view

Cafés and restaurants line parts of the promenade and the base of the towers, and a large food truck area has operated near the Katara Towers in recent seasons. Venues change fairly often in Lusail, so check what is open before you set out if you want a particular place. For a coffee stop in Lusail, see our Plan B Café guide.

How to get there

By metro and tram: Take the Doha Metro Red Line to Legtaifiya, then change to the Lusail Tram Orange or Pink line. Marina South, Marina Central, Yacht Club and Marina North stations all serve the Marina District, and the waterfront is a few minutes’ walk from each. The same travel card works on the metro and tram.

By car: From West Bay, drive north along Al Khor Coastal Road or Lusail Expressway; allow 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Parking is available in the Marina District, including paid and underground car parks; check signs for time limits. Weekend evenings are busy.

By taxi: Uber, Careem and Karwa can drop you at the Katara Towers or at any of the marina towers. This is often the easiest option late in the evening.

Best time to visit

November to March is ideal, with mild temperatures and pleasant evenings on the waterfront. October and April work in the evenings. In summer, come after dark, when the heat eases a little and the lights are at their best, but expect humidity.

The best time of day is the hour before sunset through to about an hour after, for golden light and then the illuminated skyline. Early mornings are quiet and good for running. Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest. Around New Year and Qatar National Day, Lusail often hosts fireworks and celebrations, which make for memorable but crowded evenings.

Tips for your visit

  • Take the tram. It avoids the parking scramble on weekend evenings and drops you right at the marina.
  • Arrive before sunset. You get daylight views first and the lit skyline after.
  • Bring a light layer in winter. The sea breeze can make evenings cooler than in the city.
  • Stay on the promenade. Pontoons and yacht berths are private, even if gates are open.
  • Keep drones grounded. Flying drones in Qatar needs official permission.
  • Dress modestly. It is a family area, so cover shoulders and knees.
  • Watch children near the water. Not all edges are fenced.
  • Check event days. National Day and New Year celebrations bring road closures and crowds.
Insider tip: For the classic reflection of the Katara Towers, walk to the side of the marina basin opposite the towers and look across the water just after the tower lights switch on. The water is often calmest in the early evening, before the breeze picks up.
