FAQs

FAQs: Beaches & Islands in Qatar

Are beaches in Qatar free?

Most public beaches run by the Ministry of Municipality are free to enter, including Sealine, Al Farkiya and Umm Bab. Hotel beaches and private beach clubs charge for day passes, and a few beach sections have a small fee, such as the women-only Al Mamlha beach at Al Ghariya.

Which beaches in Qatar are family-only or women-only?

Several municipal beaches are family beaches, so groups of men on their own can be turned away. Al Farkiya Beach in Al Khor has been reserved for women and children under 10 on Sundays and Wednesdays, and Al Mamlha at Al Ghariya is a fenced women-only beach.

What should I wear on a public beach in Qatar?

Modest swimwear is expected on public beaches, and you should cover up when you walk away from the water or into nearby towns. Hotel beaches are more relaxed, but follow the rules posted at each beach.

Can you swim in the sea in Qatar in summer?

Yes, but from May to September the heat is extreme, so go very early or around sunset and take plenty of water. Jellyfish are more common in summer, and most wild beaches have no lifeguards.

Which beaches in Qatar are closed?

Simaisma Beach has been closed since June 2025 for a major redevelopment, and Fuwairit Beach closes every year from 1 April to 1 August for turtle nesting. Check the official announcement before you drive.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Qatar's beaches?

Not for most: Sealine, Al Farkiya and the main beach at Umm Bab can be reached in a normal car. You only need a 4x4 to drive on the sand itself or to cross the dunes to the Inland Sea.
