FAQs

FAQs: Hidden places in Al Shamal & Zubarah

What is there to see in the north of Qatar?

The north-west has Al Zubarah, Qatar's UNESCO-listed pearling town, plus desert forts, an abandoned village and Olafur Eliasson's mirrored installation. The north-east coast has Al Ghariya and Fuwairit beaches and the old port at Al Ruwais.

How far is Al Zubarah from Doha?

About 100 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car. The roads are paved all the way to the car park, so a normal car is fine.

When is Fuwairit Beach closed?

Fuwairit Beach closes every year from 1 April to 1 August for hawksbill turtle nesting. Rules can change, so check the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change's announcement, especially in March, April, July and August.

Which sites in Al Shamal are closed?

Al Jassasiya Rock Carvings and Al Rakiyat Fort are temporarily closed by Qatar Museums, and Al Thaqab Fort and Al Jumail village are not open to the public. Al Zubarah Fort is open with a free booked ticket.

Are there facilities in the north of Qatar?

Very few at the sites themselves: many have no shade, toilets or shops, and phone signal can be patchy. Set off with a full tank, water and food.
