Overview

Marsa Malaz Kempinski is the grand, palace-style hotel of The Pearl, the man-made island district north of West Bay. It sits on its own small island within The Pearl, with a private beach, pools and 281 rooms and suites in a sand-pink building of domes, arches and balconies. At night, lit up across the water, it is one of the most photographed hotels in Doha.

It is a “staycation” in the sense that you barely leave the city: the drive from West Bay is short, and Lusail, Katara and the marinas of The Pearl are all close. What you get is a big-resort experience without a long journey: beach, pools, a spa, a kids’ club and eleven places to eat and drink, all under one roof.

Is it worth it for a weekend? If you like classic, formal luxury, and want a beach and pool without the drive to Salwa or the north, yes. Families rate it highly thanks to the kids’ club and beach. If you prefer modern, minimalist design, a sense of nature, or a quiet boutique feel, it may feel too ornate and too busy, especially at weekends.

The story behind the hotel

The Pearl-Qatar was built from the mid-2000s on reclaimed land off the coast north of West Bay, with marinas, apartment towers and themed districts. Marsa Malaz, meaning roughly “safe harbour” in Arabic, was planned as the district’s flagship hotel on a private island of its own. Kempinski, the Munich-founded luxury group, opened it on 7 January 2015, according to its own anniversary announcement.

The design leans deliberately on European palace style blended with Arabian touches: grand lobbies, chandeliers and domes, with majlis-style lounges and Arabic dining. The property is listed in the portfolio of Alfardan Properties, a long-established Qatari group, and is operated by Kempinski. It has 212 rooms and 69 suites according to Alfardan’s listing, including presidential and royal suites.

What to expect

  1. Rooms and suites

All rooms have balconies facing the Gulf, according to Visit Qatar, and the hotel promotes some of its rooms as among the largest in Doha at 75 square metres. Decor is traditional and opulent rather than minimalist, with heavy fabrics and gold accents. Families may want to look at connecting rooms or suites; couples will be comfortable in a standard sea-view room.

  2. Beach and pools

The hotel has a private beach with loungers and umbrellas, and outdoor pools overlooking the sea. Expect it to be busy on Friday and Saturday afternoons in the cooler months.

  3. Eating and drinking

Kempinski lists seven restaurants and four bars and lounges. These include Nozomi for Japanese food, Al Sufra by Mama Halima for Levantine dishes, Public House, a retro American-style diner, Harry’s Dolce Vita for Italian, and Bohemia Lounge for light bites and cigars. Visit Qatar also mentions Qamar Lounge, a casual Middle Eastern spot with teepee-style seating. Because the restaurants are open to non-guests too, it is worth booking ahead on weekend evenings.

  4. Spa and fitness

Marsa Malaz Spa, run with Clarins, has 21 treatment rooms, according to Visit Qatar. Treatments include massages, facials, body wraps and hammam rituals. There is also a gym and a professional tennis court.

  5. Kids’ club and family life

A kids’ club and children’s facilities make the hotel a popular family choice, and Kempinski describes it as welcoming families, couples and business travellers alike. For parents, being able to hand children over to organised activities for a few hours while staying within a short drive of home is a big part of the appeal.

  6. Day visits

You don’t need to stay to use the hotel. Its restaurants and lounges are open to non-guests, and day packages are offered from time to time. When we checked, Kempinski’s loyalty partner GHA Discovery listed an “Island Escape” day pass at QAR 595, running from 10am to 11pm and including beach and outdoor pool access, the thermal suite and indoor pool, and a choice of a 60-minute massage or signature hammam. Day passes and prices change; check with the hotel before you go.

Who it suits, and who it doesn’t

Families get a lot from a stay here: beach, pools, kids’ club and plenty of dining choice, without a long drive.

Couples marking an occasion will enjoy the grand setting, the spa and dinner with a view, particularly midweek.

Doha residents who want a quick reset can check in after work on a Thursday and be relaxing on the beach within half an hour.

Travellers who want nature or seclusion will find it very much a city hotel, surrounded by The Pearl’s towers and traffic. A desert or northern resort will feel more like an escape.

How much does it cost?

Rates change significantly with season, weekend demand and room type. We have not found a reliable, recent rate range worth quoting, so check current rates directly with the hotel. Weekday stays and summer months are usually cheaper, and it is worth looking out for resident and staycation packages on the hotel’s offers page.

How to get there

The hotel is on The Pearl, about 20 minutes’ drive north of West Bay in normal traffic and 29 km from Hamad International Airport, according to Visit Qatar.

  • By car: follow Lusail Expressway or the coastal roads north from West Bay and take the main entrance to The Pearl. Follow signs through the island for the Marsa Malaz Kempinski roundabout.
  • By metro: the nearest station is Legtaifiya on the Red Line. From there you will need a taxi or ride-hailing car for the last stretch across The Pearl.
  • By taxi or ride-hailing: the simplest option from anywhere in Doha. Ask for “Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl”.

A simple weekend plan

If you are staying one or two nights, this is an easy way to use your time without feeling rushed.

  1. Arrive early afternoon. Check-in times vary by rate, but aim to be on the beach or at the pool by mid-afternoon, when the heat starts to ease in the cooler months.
  2. Sunset from your balcony or the beach. Golden hour is a lovely time to be on your balcony or on the sand.
  3. Dinner in the hotel. Pick one of the signature restaurants, booked in advance, for your first evening.
  4. Morning at the spa or the beach. Mornings are the calmest time at the pools before day visitors and families arrive.
  5. An evening out on The Pearl. For the second night, take a short taxi ride to Porto Arabia or Qanat Quartier for a walk and dinner by the marina, then come back for the illuminated view of the hotel across the water.

With children, swap the spa morning for a session at the kids’ club and an afternoon at the beach, and book an earlier dinner at one of the more casual venues.

Best time to visit

November to March is the most comfortable time for the beach and outdoor terraces. April and October are hot at midday but fine in the morning and evening. From June to September the pools and beach are only really usable early and late in the day, but air-conditioned spa days and restaurant evenings make summer staycations here popular, and rates are often lower.

Weekends and public holidays, especially the National Day period in December and Eid, are busiest. A Sunday to Tuesday stay usually brings quieter pools.

Tips for your visit

  • Ask for a higher floor for wider views over the Gulf and The Pearl.
  • Book restaurants in advance on weekend evenings.
  • Check whether your rate includes breakfast, as it makes a real difference to the cost of a stay.
  • If you only want the beach and spa, compare a day pass with an overnight stay.
  • Use the hotel as a base to explore The Pearl on foot in the evenings when it cools down.
  • Traffic on and off The Pearl can be slow at peak times, so allow extra time for dinner reservations elsewhere.
  • Dress smartly for the lobby and restaurants; beachwear belongs at the pool and beach.
Insider tip: The best view of the hotel is not from inside it. After dark, walk or drive to the water’s edge facing the hotel on The Pearl’s side; the illuminated facade reflected in the water makes the classic Marsa Malaz photo.

What to bring

  • Swimwear, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Smart-casual clothes for dinner
