Umm Al Seneem Park, Ain Khaled
Home to the world's longest air-conditioned outdoor path: a 1,143 m cooled jogging loop, cycle path, playgrounds and fitness zones in Ain Khaled.
Ain Khaled, south of Salwa Road (Al Rayyan Municipality)
Overview
Umm Al Seneem Park is a neighbourhood park in Ain Khaled, a residential district on the south-western side of Doha, just south of Salwa Road. It would be one of many pleasant local parks if not for one feature: a looped walking and jogging path of 1,143 metres that is cooled with outdoor air-conditioning. Guinness World Records certified it in October 2022 as the longest air-conditioned outdoor path in the world.
That cooled loop is the reason people drive across the city to use it. In the hot months, when running outside in Doha is miserable for most of the day, you can walk or jog here in the afternoon and early evening in noticeably cooler air. Around it are a separate cycling path, fitness zones, children’s playgrounds, a reflexology path and plenty of lawn and shade.
It suits runners and walkers who want to keep training through the summer, families from the surrounding villas, and visitors curious to see how Qatar is adapting outdoor space to its climate. It is not a sightseeing park in the way Al Bidda or MIA Park are, and there are no views or monuments. Come for the exercise and the novelty, and you will leave impressed.
History and background
The park was developed by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality as part of Qatar’s programme of new public parks, and it was formally opened on 1 November 2022, a few weeks before the FIFA World Cup. Although it is often described as a Doha park, it lies within Al Rayyan Municipality.
The site covers about 130,000 square metres, with roughly two-thirds given over to green space. At the opening, Ashghal said the park had 912 trees of 18 varieties, including native species, along with 820 square metres of green walls, and a design capacity of around 6,000 visitors a day.
The headline feature is the cooled jogging track. Reports at the opening said it holds the air along the path at around 26°C, and that solar panels provide about 60 per cent of the electricity needed to run the cooling. It builds on the outdoor cooling technology that Qatar developed for its World Cup stadiums and some public spaces, applied here to everyday exercise rather than to spectators.
The record was achieved on 17 October 2022, and the park has since become a regular stop for summer runners from across Doha. Local press have described it as a social hub as much as a fitness spot, with groups meeting after work to walk laps together.
What to see and do
Walk or jog the air-conditioned loop
The 1,143-metre loop is the main event. Cooled air is released along the path, so even on a hot afternoon the temperature where you are walking is far more bearable than a few metres away. The cooling runs on a timetable: reports give 3pm to 11pm, and it is aimed at the hot months, so check if you plan a winter visit. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and hoverboards are not allowed on this path.
Five laps come to roughly 5.7 km, a handy benchmark if you’re training for a 5K or 10K and don’t want to carry a GPS watch.
Ride the cycling path
A separate cushioned cycling path of 1,135 metres runs around the park, so riders don’t mix with walkers. It is best for children learning to ride and for gentle loops rather than serious training. One of the park’s kiosks was set up for bicycle rental; check on arrival whether it is operating.
Try the Fitness Box and outdoor gyms
The park has three exercise areas with outdoor equipment, plus a solar-powered Fitness Box, an enclosed space with screens that show fitness classes you can follow for free. It is a good way to add strength work to a walk.
Walk barefoot on the reflexology path
A cobbled reflexology path invites you to take off your shoes and walk over the stones. It is a small feature, but children love it and it makes a change from the smooth tracks.
Let the children play
There are two playgrounds, one for ages 2 to 5 and one for 6 to 12, designed with accessibility in mind. With lawns, shaded seating and kiosks close by, it is an easy place to spend an evening with young children.
Picnic under the trees
The lawns and shaded seating areas are popular with families on cooler evenings. Pick a spot on the grass, bring a blanket, and use the kiosks for drinks and snacks.
How to get there
By car: The park is in Ain Khaled, south of Salwa Road. From West Bay allow about 25 to 30 minutes in normal traffic; from Aspire Zone about 10 to 15 minutes. Search “Umm Al Seneem Park” in Google Maps or Waze rather than relying on the street address. A normal car is fine.
Parking: There is an on-site car park with several hundred spaces (reported at around 378), including accessible bays and bicycle parking. It can fill up on winter weekend evenings.
Public transport: There is no metro station within walking distance. Karwa buses serve Salwa Road and Ain Khaled, but for most visitors a taxi, Uber or Careem is the practical option.
Best time to visit
This is the rare Doha park that makes sense in summer. From May to September, come in the late afternoon or evening while the track cooling is on, and you can exercise when the rest of the city is too hot. Early mornings are also good year-round, though the cooling is not usually running then.
From November to March the whole park is pleasant, the lawns are busy and the cooled track matters less. Weekend evenings (Thursday night through Saturday) are the busiest times. Park opening hours are generally from early morning until around midnight.
Tips for your visit
- Time your visit to the cooling. The air-conditioning on the track is reported to run from 3pm to 11pm. Outside those hours it is an ordinary path.
- Keep wheels off the track. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and hoverboards must use the separate cycle path.
- Use the lap distance. One loop is 1,143 metres, so counting laps gives you a reliable distance.
- Arrive early on weekend evenings. The car park and the track both get crowded.
- Bring a water bottle. There are drinking fountains, but a bottle means you can keep walking without stopping.
- Use the facilities on site. The park has toilets and prayer rooms, which not every Doha park offers.
- Dress modestly. It is a family park in a residential area, so standard sportswear with shoulders covered is the norm.
What to bring
- Running or walking shoes
- A refillable water bottle
- A small towel
- A bike and helmet for the cycle path
- A picnic blanket in the cooler months
