Villaggio Mall, Doha
A Venetian-themed mall in Aspire Zone with an indoor gondola canal, ice rink, Gondolania theme park and IMAX cinema, opposite Al Aziziyah metro.
Al Waab Street, Aspire Zone, Baaya, Al Rayyan (opposite Al Aziziyah metro)
Overview
Villaggio is the mall Doha residents send visitors to when they want something a bit theatrical. Built as a fantasy Italian town, it has cobbled-look avenues, shopfronts painted in ochre and cream, a ceiling painted as a soft blue sky, and a canal down one wing where gondolas carry passengers past cafés and fashion stores. It sits in Aspire Zone in Baaya, Al Rayyan, beside Aspire Park and in the shadow of the 300-metre Torch Doha tower.
Entry is free and the building is fully air-conditioned, which is the real reason it fills up from May to October. You pay only for what you do: a gondola ride, a session on the Olympic-size ice rink, rides at the Gondolania indoor theme park, a film at the IMAX cinema, or whatever ends up in your shopping bags. More than 200 shops share the single, very long floor, from supermarket and high-street names to the luxury houses of the Via Domo wing.
It suits families with children of almost any age, first-time visitors who want an easy half-day with air conditioning, and anyone filling a hot afternoon before an evening in Aspire Park. If you are a serious shopper chasing the newest brands, you may prefer the bigger, newer malls such as Mall of Qatar, but none of them has a canal.
The story behind Villaggio
Villaggio opened on 7 June 2006, the same year Doha hosted the 15th Asian Games next door in Aspire Zone. It was developed by Gondolania Entertainment, the company behind its theme park, and laid out on one level of roughly 90,000 square metres so that the whole place reads as a walk through a small Italian hill town rather than a stack of floors.
In May 2012 a fire in the mall killed 19 people, 13 of them children at a nursery inside the building. Villaggio closed, was refitted with upgraded safety systems and reopened in stages from September 2012. It remains one of the most painful events in the country’s recent memory.
Since then the mall has added the Via Domo luxury street, where brands such as Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Cartier sit in a quieter, more polished wing. The opening of Al Aziziyah metro station across the road in November 2019 made it one of the easiest big malls to reach without a car. The mall’s own figures put footfall at around 50,000 visitors a day.

What to see and do
Ride the gondola on the indoor canal
The canal is about 150 metres long and runs down one wing of the mall, crossed by little arched bridges. Gondoliers pole small boats along it at a gentle pace, and the ride is short: think of it as a fun few minutes and a photo, not a tour. Tickets are sold at the canal-side booth and are paid separately from anything else; earlier guides listed a small per-person fee with a cap on passengers per boat, but prices change, so check at the booth.
The best views of the canal are actually from the bridges. Stand on one as a boat passes underneath and you get the shopfronts, the water and the painted sky in a single frame.
Spend a sweaty afternoon on the ice
Villaggio’s Olympic-size ice rink is one of the few in Qatar and is used for public skating, lessons and ice hockey. Skate hire is available at the rink. Session times shift around hockey bookings and events, so if skating is the main reason for your visit, call the rink or ask at the counter before you set out. Bring socks and a light layer; it is properly cold rinkside, which is the point on a 45°C day.
Let the children loose in Gondolania
Gondolania is the indoor theme park attached to the mall. According to Qatar Living’s mid-2026 guide it is fully operational, with more than 20 rides and attractions, from bumper cars and a carousel to a drop tower, a small coaster and bungee trampolines. Rides are paid individually on a rechargeable card, and the park advertised an unlimited-rides wristband at QAR 50 in 2026, which pays for itself quickly if your children want several goes.
Gondolania usually opens later in the morning than the shops and stays open late, especially on Thursday to Saturday nights. Holidays and school breaks bring longer hours and longer queues.
Walk Via Domo, even if you are not buying
The luxury wing is calmer, brighter and more spacious than the main avenues. Even with no intention of buying a handbag, it is a pleasant ten-minute stroll and a good contrast to the busier, louder parts of the mall. Note that Via Domo can keep slightly different Friday hours from the rest of Villaggio.
Catch a film on the IMAX screen
Villaggio’s cinema was the first in Doha with an IMAX 3D screen. It is a good choice for big releases, and an evening film followed by a walk in Aspire Park makes an easy plan in the cooler months. Weekend evening shows sell out, so book online first.
Photograph the painted sky
The ceiling is the mall’s signature. It is painted as a blue sky with soft clouds. Wide shots down the main avenues, with lamp posts, balconies and the sky above, are the classic Villaggio photo. Weekday mornings give you empty avenues; evenings give you atmosphere and crowds.
How to get there
By metro: Take the Doha Metro Gold Line west to Al Aziziyah, the last stop on the line. The station sits directly opposite Villaggio, and the walk to the mall entrance is short and signposted. From Msheireb in the centre allow roughly 30 to 40 minutes door to door. Sport City, one stop earlier, is better for the stadium and Torch end of Aspire Zone.
By car: Villaggio is on Al Waab Street at the edge of Aspire Zone, about 9 to 10 kilometres west of central Doha. Outside rush hour the drive from West Bay or the Corniche is usually 20 to 30 minutes on good, fully paved city roads; no 4×4 needed. The mall advertises around 3,300 parking spaces, plus valet at the main entrances. On Thursday and Friday evenings the car parks nearest the entrances fill early.
By taxi or ride-hailing: Every driver knows Villaggio. Karwa, Uber and Careem all drop off at the main entrances, and there are taxi ranks outside for the trip back.
Tours: Several half-day Doha city tours include a stop at Villaggio with a gondola ride. You do not need one; the mall is easy to visit on your own.
Best time to visit
Season: Villaggio works all year because it is indoors, and it comes into its own from May to October, when it is far too hot to spend the afternoon outside. From November to March, plan your visit around Aspire Park: shop or skate in the afternoon, then walk outside as the sun drops.
Time of day: Weekday mornings, Sunday to Wednesday, are the quietest. Thursday evenings, Fridays after prayers and Saturdays are the busiest, with queues at Gondolania and the gondolas.
Fridays and Ramadan: The mall’s published hours are 9am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday and 9am to 11pm on Thursday and Saturday. On Friday it opens 9am to 11am, closes for midday prayers, then reopens from 12.30pm to 11pm. Hours change during Ramadan and on public holidays, so check the official site before you go.
Tips for your visit
- Pick your entrance by your plan. The gondola canal, Gondolania and the ice rink are in different parts of a very long building, and walking end to end takes longer than you expect.
- Gondolania and the gondola rides open around 10am, later than the shops. Arriving at 9am with children means a spell of window-shopping first.
- For several rides, compare the unlimited wristband with pay-per-ride credit before you load your card.
- Dress as you would anywhere public in Qatar: shoulders and knees covered for adults is the norm in malls.
- The air conditioning is strong. A light layer is useful, and essential at the rink.
- Food is easy: there is a food court and plenty of sit-down chain restaurants and cafés, including café seating out on the main avenues.
- Free Wi-Fi, porter service and wheelchair access are available; the single-level layout makes it one of the easier malls with buggies and wheelchairs.
- Note where you parked. The car parks wrap around the building and entrances look alike after dark.
What to bring
- A light jacket or cardigan for the air conditioning, and a warmer layer if you plan to skate.
- Thick socks for hired skates; gloves are a good idea for small children on the ice.
- A Doha Metro travel card if you are coming by train.
- Sun protection and water if you plan to carry on into Aspire Park afterwards.
- A phone with charge for booking cinema seats and finding your car park entrance again.
Combine it with nearby places
Aspire Park: Qatar’s biggest park, with a lake, lawns and running paths, is directly behind the mall. It is the natural second half of any Villaggio visit from November to April.
3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum: A world-class, very hands-on sports museum at Khalifa International Stadium, a short walk or one metro stop away.
Khalifa International Stadium and the Torch Doha: The World Cup stadium and the 300-metre tower across Aspire Zone, with a revolving restaurant at the top of the Torch.
Education City Mosque (Minaretein): The striking mosque with two tall minarets in Education City, a short drive north and well worth seeing lit up at night.
Oxygen Park, Education City: A sunken, shaded park about 10 minutes’ drive north, good for a quieter late-afternoon walk.
