Overview

Mall of Qatar sits on the western edge of greater Doha, beside Dukhan Highway in Al Rayyan, and it is built for long days rather than quick errands. Behind the jewelled façade are three floors of shops, more than 100 cafés and restaurants, a 19-screen cinema, several play and adventure zones for children and a central atrium called the Oasis, where a revolving stage hosts free shows most of the year.

The reason to make the trip out here, rather than to a mall closer to West Bay, is that combination of scale and free entertainment. You can watch a family show on the Oasis stage, put the children into a role-play city or a trampoline arena, see a film on one of the region’s largest IMAX screens and eat dinner without moving the car. It also has its own metro station, which makes it one of the easiest big days out in Qatar if you do not drive.

It suits families above all, especially in the hot months from May to September when outdoor plans shrink. It also works for anyone staying near Education City or Al Rayyan, for visitors on a long layover who want air-conditioned time and a show, and for football fans heading to Ahmad bin Ali Stadium next door.

The story behind the mall

Mall of Qatar was developed by UrbaCon Trading & Contracting and designed by the London-based architects Chapman Taylor. It had a soft opening on 10 December 2016, when only part of the mall was trading, and its grand opening followed on 8 April 2017. According to Chapman Taylor, the building has around 500,000 square metres of gross area, with about 256,000 square metres of retail and leisure space spread across three levels.

The design was meant to make the mall feel like a place to spend a day, not only to shop. The architects describe the Oasis as a landscaped atrium about 30 metres high, with planted beds, curving walkways and support columns shaped like living trees, under a large glazed roof. At its centre they installed a custom revolving stage with multiple lifts so that shows could be staged all year. Chapman Taylor’s figures also mention 7,000 parking spaces and around 100 food and drink units.

The mall’s location made more sense as the city grew west. Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, the Al Rayyan venue rebuilt for the FIFA World Cup 2022, stands right beside it, and the Doha Metro Green Line reached the area in December 2019, when the Al Riffa station opened opposite the mall as the line’s western terminus. Mall of Qatar now holds the naming rights to that station.

What to see and do

  1. Catch a show on the Oasis stage

The Oasis is the heart of the mall and the main reason many families choose it. Shows run on the revolving stage through much of the year, and the mall regularly brings in visiting productions for runs of a week or two. In spring 2026 it hosted The Legend: King of Pop Live on Stage, a free tribute show on the Oasis stage from 23 April to 2 May, with evening performances. From 24 September to 3 October 2026 the stage is home to the International Ice Cream Show, with performances at 4.30pm, 6pm and 7.30pm.

Programmes change constantly, so check the events page on the mall’s website before you go. Arrive ten minutes early for weekend evening shows: the best views are from the ground floor around the stage, but the balconies on the upper levels give a clearer look at the whole set and are easier with a pushchair.

  2. Let the children loose

Mall of Qatar has several separate family entertainment zones, each with its own tickets. KidZmondo is a scaled-down city where children aged 2 to 14 can try more than 80 professions, use public services and pay with the city’s own currency, the Kidlar. It is the pick for younger children who like role play.

Xtremeland is an action-focused amusement park with rides such as a drop-and-twist tower and a flipping flat ride, plus gentler areas for toddlers. Rush Action Park is the place for energetic 4 to 14-year-olds, with chaser walls, a climbing tower, an arena and performance trampolines. Prices, height limits and session times vary by venue, so check each one’s own page before you promise anything.

  3. See a film on the giant IMAX screen

Novo Cinemas runs a 19-screen megaplex here. The headline is its IMAX with Laser auditorium, which the mall describes as the largest IMAX with Laser screen in the Middle East and North Africa. There are also MX4D screens with moving seats and effects, premium luxury seating and a dedicated kids’ screen. Book ahead for big releases on Thursday and Friday nights.

  4. Bowl a few frames

8-Pin Bowling has eight lanes inside the Novo Cinemas area and suits children and adults alike. It is a useful plan B when the Oasis show has finished or the queue for a film is longer than you hoped.

  5. Eat your way round

Visit Qatar counts more than 100 cafés and restaurants. Expect a big food court for quick, cheap meals alongside sit-down chains; the mall’s own dining list includes names such as Black Tap on the ground floor, Caffè Concerto, Chili’s and Applebee’s, along with coffee shops and dessert counters. Restaurants around the Oasis fill up before and after shows, so eat a little earlier or later if you want a table with a view of the stage.

  6. Shop the big names

With roughly 500 shops, the mall covers fashion, beauty, electronics, homeware and a hypermarket. It is spread over three floors and is very long, so decide on your priorities and use the mall map rather than wandering end to end. Luxury and premium brands tend to cluster together, which helps if you only have an hour.

How to get there

By metro. This is the easiest option for most visitors. Take the Green Line west to Al Riffa – Mall of Qatar, the last stop on the line, which sits on Dukhan Highway opposite the mall. From central Doha you can change from the Red Line at Msheireb. The mall says trains run roughly every five minutes. Friday service starts later than on other days, and final departures vary by day, so check Qatar Rail’s current timetable before you plan a late evening.

By car. The mall’s address is Jahhaniya Interchange, Street 373, Zone 51, Al Rayyan, beside the Amiri Guard on Dukhan Road. The mall puts it about 20 minutes from downtown Doha, though weekend evening traffic on Dukhan Highway and around the stadium can add more. The roads are all fully surfaced, so any car will do. Parking is extensive, with around 7,000 spaces according to the architects, and there are spaces reserved for disabled visitors and families. Note which entrance you parked by: the building is so long that coming out of the wrong door is a common way to lose twenty minutes.

By taxi or ride-hailing. Karwa taxis and the usual ride-hailing apps all serve the mall. On match days at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, or on busy holiday evenings, pickups can be slow, so the metro is often quicker on the way home.

From the hotel. If you are staying at The AlRayyan Hotel Doha, Curio Collection by Hilton, you can walk straight into the mall, which makes it an easy base for a family stay out of the centre.

Best time to visit

Mall of Qatar is air-conditioned, so it works all year, but it comes into its own from May to September, when the heat makes outdoor plans hard work in the middle of the day. From October to April, combine it with an outdoor morning in Education City or Al Shahaniya and use the mall for the afternoon and evening.

For shopping in peace, go on a weekday morning soon after opening. For the Oasis shows and the buzz, go in the late afternoon or evening, especially Thursday and Friday, when Visit Qatar lists later closing at midnight. Weekend evenings, Eid holidays and Qatar National Day (18 December) are the busiest times; the mall marks national and religious occasions with special performances, but car parks and restaurants fill fast. On match or event days at the neighbouring stadium, expect heavier traffic.

Tips for your visit

  • Check the events page first. The Oasis line-up changes every few weeks, and some runs only have two or three show times a day.
  • Use the official map or app. The mall is long and the three floors can feel alike; locating your target in advance saves a lot of walking.
  • Book the cinema and kids’ zones ahead at busy times. Weekend and holiday sessions can sell out, and each venue has its own tickets and rules.
  • Dress modestly. The mall’s policy bars inappropriate clothing, including indecent clothing and dirty work wear, and security can refuse entry at the doors. Covering shoulders and knees is the safe choice.
  • Bring a light layer. The air conditioning is strong, particularly in the cinema.
  • Remember your entrance and parking zone. Take a photo of the nearest sign before you walk in.
  • Allow longer than you think. With a show, a play session and a meal, most families stay three to five hours.
Insider tip: For the best view of an Oasis show without the crush, head up to a first-floor balcony overlooking the stage. You see the whole revolving set and the fountains around it, and it is far easier with a pushchair than the ground-floor crowd.

Combine it with nearby places

Qatar National Library. Rem Koolhaas’s vast open-plan library in Education City, a short drive east. Free to enter, quiet and beautiful, and a good contrast to the mall’s noise.

Education City Mosque (Minaretein). Two tall, calligraphy-covered minarets rising over a mosque that seems to float on columns; one of the most striking buildings in Al Rayyan.

Oxygen Park. Shaded walking and running paths in Education City, best in the cooler months before you head indoors.

Aspire Park. Doha’s big green park beside the Torch, with a lake, playgrounds and long paths. Go for a late-afternoon walk, then come to the mall for dinner and a show.

Al Shahaniya Camel Racetrack. Continue west along Dukhan Highway in winter to see camels training or racing with robot jockeys.
