Fenyal, Gewan Island
A MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Qatari café-restaurant on Crystal Walk, loved for balaleet breakfasts, loomi grills and dallah coffee.
Crystal Walk, Gewan Island (next to The Pearl), Doha
Overview
Fenyal is a casual Qatari café-restaurant on Crystal Walk, the promenade of Gewan Island next to The Pearl. It opens early for traditional breakfasts of balaleet, foul and fresh bread, and stays open until late with grills, kofta and Qatari comfort food. Arabic coffee comes in a proper dallah.
It is a young place, opened in spring 2025, but it has built a following fast. Within eight months it was awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, the guide’s award for good food at good value, and the inspectors describe it as popular with locals. That makes it one of the easiest places in the city to eat Qatari food the way residents do: relaxed, unfussy, with family groups at the next table.
It suits a long breakfast or brunch, an informal dinner after an evening at The Pearl, and anyone who wants Qatari food without the formality of a heritage restaurant. Prices sit in the MICHELIN Guide’s lowest band.
The story behind Fenyal
Fenyal opened in April 2025; the restaurant marked its first anniversary on Instagram in April 2026, thanking guests for growing the place with them. In December 2025, when the second edition of the MICHELIN Guide Doha was announced, Fenyal was one of eight restaurants in the city given a Bib Gourmand. Its own post about the award put the credit on its team and on the regulars who, as it put it, have become like family.
The setting is new Doha. Gewan Island is a recent residential and leisure development beside The Pearl, and Crystal Walk is its waterfront promenade of shops and restaurants. The MICHELIN Guide describes Fenyal as a simple, colourful restaurant in a modern building among towers, with a terrace. Inside, the look draws on the traditional majlis, with warm tones and soft lighting.
The menu is the opposite of new: dishes Qatari families have eaten for generations, cooked carefully and served without fuss. The restaurant’s Instagram captions are written in Gulf Arabic and lean on the language of home and hospitality, with lines about the smell of a family house and the gathering being the most important dish.
What to order
Qatari breakfast
Breakfast is a highlight, served from 7am. Expect balaleet (sweet saffron vermicelli with egg), foul (slow-cooked fava beans) and fresh bread from the oven, with Arabic coffee poured from a dallah. The smell of the bread oven is one of the things regulars mention first.
Falafel, kofta and grills
The MICHELIN inspectors mention falafel and lamb kofta, and later in the day the menu expands to grills, chicken and ribs with hummus. Fenyal’s own posts feature a charcoal-grilled loomi tikka, marinated with dried black lime (loomi), one of the defining flavours of Qatari cooking, served with Iranian-style bread.
Chicken nashif
A Gulf comfort dish of chicken cooked with spices in a thick, relatively dry sauce, typically eaten with bread or rice. It is one of the menu’s traditional staples and a good choice if you want something homely rather than grilled.
Sambosa
Crisp sambosa are a fixture of Qatari tables, especially in Ramadan. Fenyal has offered them in four fillings: meat with pine nuts, loomi tikka, spinach and cheese, and cheese.
Elbah and rahash
For dessert, the MICHELIN Guide recommends elbah, a baked saffron custard and an old-fashioned Gulf sweet. Fenyal has also posted about rahash, a sesame-based sweet much loved in the Gulf, with the caption that everyone has their own taste but rahash is the one thing everyone agrees on.
Qahwa and fresh juices
Qatari coffee (qahwa), light-roasted and flavoured with cardamom and sometimes saffron, is served in a dallah. Fresh juices are on the menu too. No alcohol is served.
The menu changes with the seasons and around Ramadan, so check Instagram for current dishes.
How to get there
Fenyal is on Crystal Walk, Gewan Island, next to The Pearl in the north of Doha.
