Overview

Place Vendôme is Lusail’s showpiece mall: a vast complex modelled on classic French architecture, with symmetrical façades, arcades, an outdoor canal and a plaza where a choreographed fountain plays to music. It has more than 580 shops, but most first-time visitors remember it for the setting rather than the shopping.

Think of it as an evening out rather than an errand. You can browse the luxury wing, watch a fountain show from a terrace table, let the children loose in an indoor theme park and finish with dinner by the water, all without stepping into the heat for more than a few minutes. It sits about 11 km north of central Doha and is reachable by metro and tram, which makes it an easy half-day trip even without a car.

It suits families, couples looking for a relaxed evening, shoppers after big-name brands, and anyone who needs an air-conditioned plan on a summer day. If you dislike crowds, choose your timing carefully; weekend evenings get busy.

History and background

Place Vendôme was developed by United Developers, a consortium of Qatari investors, and designed by the Doha-based Arab Engineering Bureau. Work started in March 2014 and the mall opened on 15 April 2022, around seven months before Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup. Its name and look borrow from the Place Vendôme in Paris, one of the French capital’s best-known squares.

The numbers are big. The complex has around 1.15 million square metres of built-up area, which covers retail, hotel and residential space, and it was designed to handle up to 100,000 visitors a day. Behind the scenes, an underground pneumatic waste system moves rubbish through about 3 km of pipes, so you will not see bin lorries on the plaza.

The design has been well received. In 2023 Place Vendôme was named the world’s most beautiful shopping mall in the Prix Versailles architecture awards, and in 2024 it won the Premier Shopping Mall Experience category at the Qatar Tourism Awards.

What to see and do

  1. The Dancing Fountains

The fountain show is the main reason many people visit. Water jets, music and lighting are choreographed together in the open plaza at the centre of the complex, and after dark the effect is much stronger. According to the mall’s official website, shows run every hour from 1pm to 11pm. Visit Qatar lists hourly evening shows from 7pm with laser effects, so the evening programme may differ from the daytime one. Either way, plan to be on the plaza a few minutes before the hour.

More than 30 restaurants and cafés overlook the plaza, so you can watch from a table rather than standing. If you are on foot, stand a little back from the railings, where you can take in the whole pattern of jets rather than just the nearest ones.

  2. The canal and the outdoor promenade

An artificial canal runs through the outdoor part of the complex, lined with terraces and smaller fountains. It is the most photogenic part of Place Vendôme, particularly at blue hour when the façades are lit. Outdoor seating is pleasant from November to March; in summer, most people stay inside and look out.

  3. Architecture and the main galleries

Inside, the mall is laid out over several floors around long, open galleries and courts with a strong Parisian theme. The scale is the point, so walk the length of the main galleries at least once. If you like architecture, compare it with the very different, low-rise approach at Msheireb Downtown Doha in the city centre: two expensive answers to the same question of how a modern Qatari city should look.

  4. Luxury and high-street shopping

Place Vendôme mixes luxury, premium and mid-market brands. The luxury side includes names such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Cartier, Fendi and Tiffany & Co., while high-street shoppers will find brands like Zara and Adidas. The luxury area is noticeably calmer than the main floors, which is a relief on busy weekends. Store line-ups change, so use the directory on the official website if you are going for a particular shop.

  5. Family entertainment

Trocadéro Theme Park is the mall’s big indoor attraction, with indoor go-karting (Mini Le Mans), laser tag, a classic carousel, virtual-reality experiences, bowling and an arcade. Novo Cinemas runs a luxury cinema on site, and other options include Game Over Escape Rooms. Tickets for these are separate from mall entry, which is free.

  6. Dining

Dining ranges from food-court counters to sit-down restaurants with terraces facing the fountains or the canal. Restaurants tend to stay open later than the shops. Rather than aiming for a specific place, decide whether you want a fountain view, a canal view or a quick meal indoors, then walk the plaza and choose. Book ahead for terrace tables on Thursday to Saturday evenings and during holidays.

  7. Le Royal Méridien and the hotel side

The five-star Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme Lusail, part of Marriott, is built into the complex, with direct access to the mall. It is a convenient base if you want to be close to Lusail’s newer attractions, and its restaurants are an option if you want something quieter than the plaza.

How to get there

By metro and tram: take the Doha Metro Red Line to Legtaifiya, then change within the station to the Lusail Tram. Ride the Orange Line (towards Lusail Central) to Tarfat South, from where the mall is a three-to-four-minute walk along shaded paths, according to the mall’s own directions. The Pink Line also stops at Tarfat South. A single tram trip costs QAR 2, or buy a QAR 6 day pass that covers both metro and tram. The tram runs from 5.30am to midnight Saturday to Wednesday, until 1am on Thursday, and from 2pm to 1am on Friday.

By taxi or ride-hailing: the mall suggests allowing 15 to 25 minutes from central Doha and 30 to 40 minutes from Hamad International Airport, depending on traffic. Ask for Place Vendôme Mall, Lusail.

By car: head north on the Lusail Expressway. From the airport, use the G-Ring Road and Al Majd Road to join it. The mall has around 7,500 parking spaces in multi-storey car parks, but queues for entry and exit build up on weekend evenings and around big events in Lusail.

Best time to visit

Place Vendôme is fully air-conditioned, so it works all year, and it is one of the better summer options in Qatar. The outdoor plaza and canal are most enjoyable from November to March, when you can sit outside for a fountain show in the evening without overheating.

For shopping in peace, go on a weekday morning or early afternoon. For atmosphere, arrive about an hour before sunset, walk the canal in the golden light, then stay for the evening fountain shows. Thursday to Saturday evenings, school holidays, Eid and the National Day period are the busiest times.

During Ramadan, opening hours change and the busiest period shifts to after iftar, so check the schedule before you go.

Tips for your visit

  • Check opening hours on the official website before you set off. The site currently lists 10am to 11pm daily, but restaurants and weekend hours have been longer in the past, and Ramadan hours differ.
  • Time your arrival to the fountain schedule, and get a table or a railing spot a few minutes before the hour.
  • Use the metro and tram on weekend evenings. You avoid car park queues and the walk from Tarfat South is short.
  • The mall is big. Pick up a map or use the directory at a guest service desk, and ask about the free golf cart rides if anyone in your group struggles with long walks.
  • Wheelchairs and power banks are available from the guest service desks, and there is free Wi-Fi for two hours.
  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as in all malls in Qatar.
  • Bring a light layer; the air-conditioning inside is strong, especially if you are coming from the heat outside.
  • Book terrace tables in advance on busy evenings if you want a fountain view.
Insider tip: Do the outdoor part first and the indoor part second. Walk the canal and watch a show at dusk, then retreat inside for shopping or dinner once the plaza fills up. You get the best light and avoid the evening crush at the railings.
