Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park, Abu Samra
Hilton Salwa's water and adventure park near the Saudi border: Sea Caves slides, canyoning, laser tag, tickets and the 2026–27 closures.
Hilton Salwa Beach Resort, Salwa Road exit 86, near Abu Samra
Overview
Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park is the theme park inside Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas, on Qatar’s south-west coast near the Abu Samra border crossing with Saudi Arabia. Its heart is the Sea Caves Waterpark, built around an artificial rock mountain with waterfalls, caves, slides, a wave pool and a lazy river. Around it is a dry adventure zone with laser tag, a man-made canyoning course and diving.
The park describes itself as one of the largest theme parks in the Middle East, with 19 attractions and 30 rides and slides. It is a long drive from Doha, which keeps it calmer than city attractions on many days, and it works as a full family day out or as part of a resort weekend.
This guide is about the park itself: what is included in a day ticket, which rides suit which ages, what costs extra, the closures to know about for 2026–27, and how to plan the drive. If you want to stay overnight, our guide to Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas covers the rooms, villas and beach.
History and background
Desert Falls was built as part of the Salwa Beach Resort project, owned by Katara Hospitality and managed by Hilton. The water park opened for special previews at the end of December 2020, with general admission sold at QAR 150 at the time, and the resort itself announced its opening in early 2021. Hilton described the complex as home to Qatar’s largest theme park.
The setting is unusual for Qatar. Instead of sitting in a city, the park rises from flat desert next to the sea, close to the Saudi border. The theming plays on that: rock canyons, caves and a 32-metre mountain at the centre, plus a cast of desert characters such as Lenny the Leopard and Sandy the Sand Cat.
The canyoning course is a point of pride. According to the park, it was the first man-made canyoning attraction in the Middle East and the third of its kind in the world, with 17 pools, 10 slides, 16 cliff jumps up to 7.5 metres and two abseiling points.
What to see and do
Sea Caves Waterpark: the main rides
A day ticket covers the Sea Caves Waterpark. The signature ride is King Cobra, an enclosed twin-tube slide that sends you into the mouth of a giant snake. Family Abyss takes up to four riders on a raft into a huge funnel, Super Bowl spins you round a bowl at speed, and Spinning Rapids starts at the top of the mountain and sends rafts of three to six people down an open slide into the river. The Whizzard Mat Racer lets you race friends head first, and Inner Tube Slides twist through enclosed tunnels.
Most of these have a minimum height of 1.2 metres, with weight limits on some. Spinning Rapids allows riders from 1.06 metres when accompanied and 1.1 metres alone.
Wave pool, Falls Pool and lazy river
The Wave Pool simulates ocean waves with a shallow, beach-like end. The Falls Pool sits beneath the waterfalls for a calmer swim, and the 268-metre lazy river loops around the park, so you can float on a tube or swim round. Parts of the park are covered by rock ceilings that create the cave effect and give welcome shade.
Kids’ pools
Younger children have three main areas. Ship Kids Pool is a dhow with five slides and water features (minimum 0.9 metres for the lower slides and 1 metre for the upper two). Lenny’s Lagoon is an interactive water playground with a tipping bucket, and Dahl Kids Pool is another shallow play area, both from 1 metre.
Surf Dunes
A surf simulator where you ride a standing wave on a board. Minimum height is 1.5 metres, and it is as much fun to watch as to try.
Family Canyoning
This is the attraction that makes Desert Falls different. You work your way through pools, slides, tunnels and cliff jumps of different heights, with helmets, life jackets and shoes provided. A session lasts 30 minutes and costs QAR 50 per person, with a minimum height of 1.2 metres (1.5 metres for the extreme route alone). Pools range from 1.5 to 6 metres deep.
Nimr Laser Tag
Laser tag in 12-minute games, with sessions starting every 30 minutes and up to 30 players per game, so small groups may play with strangers. It costs QAR 85 per person per session, minimum height 1.2 metres.
Aqua Glide, diving and go-karts
The diving centre offers Aqua Glide (QAR 65 per session) and scuba diving (minimum age 8). The Desert Street Circuit go-kart track was listed as closed until further notice in October 2026. Check the status of all add-on activities before you travel.
Tickets and prices
Book the Sea Caves day ticket online through the official Desert Falls booking site, where you choose your visit date. In October 2026 the online price for a weekday visit was QAR 150 for both adult (above 1.2 metres) and junior (below 1.2 metres) tickets. Children under three enter free with proof of age. Tickets are non-refundable and can’t be transferred; to change the date, email the park.
The day ticket does not include Aqua Glide, Family Canyoning, go-karts, laser tag or scuba diving, which you pay for separately. It also does not give access to the rest of the resort; the resort sells separate day passes covering the beach and pools. Hotel guests get water park admission included in their stay but must still pre-book a slot.
The park runs regular offers and events, such as themed festival days, so check the booking site before you pay full price.
Opening hours and closures for 2026–27
Sea Caves Waterpark hours in October 2026:
- Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday: 12pm to 6pm
- Thursday to Saturday: 10am to 6pm
- Monday: closed
Two closures matter if you are planning ahead. The water park is closed every Monday from October to December 2026, except 26 October. It will also close for annual maintenance from 17 January to 20 February 2027. The park says other Desert Falls attractions remain open during these closures, and add-on activities keep their own hours, so confirm on +974 4423 6666 before you drive.
How to get there
By car: Drive west out of Doha on Salwa Road towards Abu Samra and take exit 86, following signs for Hilton Salwa and Desert Falls. Most of the route is a fast, straight highway through open desert. Allow about an hour to an hour and a quarter from central Doha, depending on traffic. Parking at the park entrance is free during opening hours.
Without a car: There is no public transport to the resort. A taxi or ride-hailing car is possible but expensive for a round trip, and finding a ride back late in the day can take time. Some families book a driver for the day.
No 4×4 is needed. The road is paved all the way.
Best time to visit
October, November, March and April are the sweet spot: water warm, air bearable. From December to February the air can feel cool once you are wet, and the water park closes for maintenance from mid-January to late February. In summer the park is open, but midday heat is fierce; arrive for opening, take a long shaded lunch, and save the slides for later in the day.
Thursday to Saturday gives you the longest hours. Weekends and public holidays are usually the busiest days, so a Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday is worth considering if you can live with the noon start.
Tips for your visit
- Bring your original ID. Every guest must show an original, physical QID or passport at the counter. Photocopies and phone photos are not accepted.
- Wear nylon or Lycra swimwear. Cotton clothing is not allowed in the pools or on the slides, and you may be asked to change.
- Plan for cashless. The park takes cards and mobile wallets only. If you bring cash, load it onto a wristband at a conversion station and claim any unused balance back the same day.
- Leave the picnic at home. Outside food and drink are not allowed, except one sealed 500ml bottle of water, baby food and dietary or medical needs.
- Accompany children. Under-13s must be with an adult aged 18 or over, who needs a ticket too.
- Book add-ons on arrival. Canyoning, laser tag and other extras are booked at their own receptions for the same day, and you sign a waiver.
- Rent a locker and towel. Both are available for an extra charge.
- Check ride status. Rides depend on operations and maintenance, and the go-karts and MIQA restaurant were listed as closed in October 2026.
