If you want fireworks on New Year’s Eve in Doha, the answer for the last three years has been the same: Lusail Boulevard. Qatar’s main public countdown has been held on this wide avenue in Lusail City every year since the night welcoming 2024, and it has grown each time. For 2025 The Peninsula reported around 300,000 visitors, and for the night welcoming 2026 Qatar News Agency reported more than 250,000 people watching what organisers billed as Qatar’s largest fireworks display, with 1,000 pyrodrones and 15,300 individual fireworks fired from 46 launch positions.
The free public event is only half the picture. Hotels across West Bay, Lusail and The Pearl run dinners, galas and rooftop parties, the desert camps along the southern coast offer a very different kind of midnight, and families have plenty of calmer options in Katara, Souq Waqif and Msheireb. This guide explains each choice, how to get to Lusail and home again without losing two hours in traffic, the rules worth knowing in Qatar, and what to bring.
One important caveat. As of 1 October 2026, arrangements for the night of 31 December 2026 (welcoming 2027) have not been announced. Everything below that refers to a specific year is labelled with that year. Use it to plan, then check the official announcements from Lusail City, Visit Qatar, Qatar Rail and the Ministry of Interior in the last fortnight of December.
At a glance
- Main fireworks: Lusail Boulevard has hosted Qatar’s official countdown three years running (welcoming 2024, 2025 and 2026). The 2026 show combined fireworks, pyrodrones and laser shows.
- Cost: the public event on the boulevard was free. A ticketed “Al Majlis” zone for the night welcoming 2026 cost QAR 300 for adults and QAR 150 for children aged 6 to 12, and sold out.
- Who could attend (2026): the December 31 event was announced as open to families only. Check whether the same rule applies for 2027.
- Getting there: Doha Metro Red Line to Lusail QNB. For the night welcoming 2026 the last train left Lusail QNB at 2.22am, while several Lusail Tram lines were closed or cut back from the afternoon.
- Weather: average lows in December and January sit in the mid-teens °C, so bring a light jacket.
- Alcohol: only in licensed hotel restaurants and bars; drinking or being drunk in public is illegal.
- 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday, and 1 January 2027 is a Friday, so expect a full weekend crowd.
Where the fireworks are: Lusail Boulevard
Lusail Boulevard is a 1.3 km showpiece street in Lusail City, at the northern end of the Doha Metro Red Line. It is lined with offices and restaurants and closed at its western end by the four Lusail Plaza Towers, which double as a giant screen for projection mapping and lasers on event nights. Since the 2022 World Cup it has become Qatar’s preferred stage for big public celebrations, from National Day to Ramadan nights. Our full guide to Lusail Boulevard covers the street on an ordinary evening.
What happened in recent years
Night welcoming 2024. The Ministry of Interior closed the boulevard and the main roads leading to it from 31 December 2023, with laser and fireworks shows scheduled from 8pm, according to The Peninsula. The road closure for the winter events programme ran until mid-February 2024.
Night welcoming 2025. The Peninsula reported about 300,000 visitors, mostly residents, citizens and GCC tourists. The programme opened with a laser show at 6pm, followed by live music at 10pm and a midnight display of fireworks and pyrodrones. Doha Metro and Lusail Tram both ran until 2am. The organiser, Qatari Diar, later received a Guinness World Records title for the most fireworks launched by multirotors (drones) in an aerial display.
Night welcoming 2026. Lusail City announced the event as open to families only, with activities from 6pm to 2am, a 3D mapping and laser show on the towers, and a countdown with fireworks and pyrodrones at midnight. Qatar News Agency reported more than 250,000 people attending, 4,000 pyrotechnic shots, 1,000 pyrodrones and 15,300 fireworks synchronised across 46 launch locations. Qatari Diar and Visit Qatar were named as organisers.

The free public zone
Most people watch from the open boulevard itself. In 2025 (welcoming 2026) public access opened at 5pm according to local event guides, with the entertainment starting at 6pm. There are no seats, and once the central stretch fills you will be standing for several hours. The best views of the towers are from the middle and eastern parts of the street looking west, but the pyrodrones and aerial shells are high enough to be seen from much of the district.
Because the show uses dozens of launch points, you do not need to be in the very front section to see the fireworks. You do need to be on the boulevard or close to it for the laser and projection work on the towers, which is a big part of the show.
The ticketed Al Majlis zone
For the night welcoming 2026, Lusail added a private, ticket-only area called Al Majlis. The Peninsula reported prices of QAR 300 for adults and QAR 150 for children aged 6 to 12, with under-6s free, sold through Virgin Megastore. Tickets included food and drinks, giveaways and reserved parking, with doors at 5pm. It sold out before the night. The Peninsula reported the ticket sale on 27 December, only four days before the event, so if it returns watch Lusail City’s channels closely from mid-December.
The families-only rule
The 2025 announcement (for the night welcoming 2026) made the boulevard event families only, as reported by The Peninsula and Gulf Times. Qatar often uses “family” days and zones at busy public events to manage crowds. In practice this affects groups of single men most. If you are in a group of friends without family, check the rule for 2026–27 as soon as it is announced and have a plan B, such as a hotel venue or one of the alternatives below.
Other places to spend New Year’s Eve in Doha
In the coverage we checked for the last two New Years, the official fireworks were in Lusail only. We found no reports of an official New Year’s Eve display at Katara, the Corniche, The Pearl or Msheireb, although Katara does hold fireworks for both Eids and the Corniche is the centre of National Day. So treat the places below as atmospheres rather than fireworks venues, and check the Visit Qatar events calendar in December in case 2026–27 brings something new.
Lusail Marina Promenade
A short way south of the boulevard, the Lusail Marina Promenade is a palm-lined waterfront walk beneath the crescent-shaped Katara Towers. It is a good place for an early-evening stroll and dinner before you walk or ride north towards the boulevard, and a calmer place to retreat to afterwards. We cannot promise clear sightlines to the show from here, so if seeing the fireworks matters, be on or near the boulevard by about 10pm.

Place Vendôme and the Lusail hotels
Place Vendôme, Lusail’s Paris-inspired mall, sits on the Lusail Tram network with an outdoor canal and dancing fountain. Its attached hotel, Le Royal Méridien, and the Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail both ran New Year’s Eve dinners and parties for the night welcoming 2026, according to local listings. Booking a table in Lusail is one of the few ways to stay close to the action with a seat and a toilet nearby. Ask the venue directly what you will actually see from your table before paying for a “view”.
Katara Cultural Village
Katara is a pleasant, low-key place to spend the early evening: amphitheatre, beach, galleries, restaurants and the clay pigeon towers. Al-Monitor’s guide to the night welcoming 2026 suggested Katara and Souq Waqif for festive evenings without formal dress codes. Several hotels in and around Katara, including The Chedi Katara and Katara Hills, also ran ticketed New Year’s Eve dinners for that year. See our Katara Cultural Village guide for parking and what is where.
Doha Corniche and the Museum of Islamic Art
The seven-kilometre Corniche is where Doha celebrates National Day on 18 December, but on New Year’s Eve in recent years it has been a place to walk rather than to watch a show. It is still lovely at night, with the West Bay towers lit up across the bay and wooden dhows at the Dhow Harbour. Some dhow operators run dinner cruises on big nights; QIC’s guide to the night welcoming 2026 described cruises leaving around 8pm and returning after midnight. Confirm the route and what is included with the operator. Our Doha Corniche guide covers the whole waterfront, and the park around the Museum of Islamic Art makes a good stop on the way.

The Pearl
The Pearl’s island districts have their own New Year’s Eve scene, centred on hotel parties. For the night welcoming 2026, local listings showed events at Marsa Malaz Kempinski and the St. Regis Marsa Arabia Island. Earlier in the evening, Qanat Quartier, with its pastel canal-side buildings, is a good place for photos and a relaxed dinner. Parking on The Pearl fills up on weekend nights, and 31 December 2026 is a Thursday.
Souq Waqif and Msheireb
If you want an evening out without the crowds of Lusail, the old centre is a good choice. Souq Waqif stays busy and atmospheric late into the evening, with grills, shisha cafés and families walking the lanes; see our Souq Waqif guide. Next door, Msheireb Downtown Doha has wide pedestrian streets, hotel restaurants and a free tram (note that the Msheireb tram normally stops at 9pm). If you want to wake up in the souq on 1 January, the Souq Waqif boutique hotels are a memorable base.
Old Doha Port and Al Wakrah
Two more low-key options: the colourful Mina District at Old Doha Port, good for a late walk and dinner by the water, and Al Wakrah Souq south of Doha, where seafood restaurants and the seafront make for a calm local evening. Neither has hosted official New Year’s fireworks in the coverage we found.
Free spots versus hotel and restaurant packages
New Year’s Eve in Qatar splits neatly into two worlds. The public celebrations are free, alcohol-free, family-focused and crowded. The hotel events are paid, often include drinks (alcohol is served only at licensed venues), and range from a family buffet to a black-tie gala.
Free public options
- Lusail Boulevard: the official countdown, fireworks and pyrodrones, entertainment from 6pm in recent years. Free, but you will stand for hours and queue to leave.
- Waterfront walks at Lusail Marina, the Corniche, Old Doha Port or Katara beach: free, calmer, no official show in recent years.
- Souq Waqif and Msheireb: free to wander, with dinner at your own budget.
Our guide to free things to do in Qatar has more ideas for the days around New Year.
Types of hotel and restaurant packages
Listings published by Marhaba and Qatar Alive in December 2025 give a good sense of the range for the night welcoming 2026. Treat these as a guide to what exists, not as next year’s prices.
- Family buffets. Hotel buffets with live cooking stations and a kids’ price. For example, Al Rayyan Hotel listed QAR 180 for adults and QAR 90 for children for its New Year’s Eve buffet.
- Set dinners and tasting menus. Multi-course menus in hotel restaurants, often with live music and a midnight toast, usually with a choice of soft-drink or alcoholic beverage packages.
- Galas and themed parties. Ballroom or poolside events with DJs, bands and a dress code. Some sell VIP tables.
- Rooftop lounges. Smaller venues with skyline views and DJs, often adults-only and quick to sell out.
- Staycation packages. A room plus dinner or party entry and breakfast, which removes the need to drive home.
- Island and wellness options. Banana Island Resort by Anantara listed a New Year’s Eve celebration for both in-house and walk-in guests, and Zulal Wellness Resort in the north offered a quieter dinner.
Across those listings, prices for the night welcoming 2026 ran from under QAR 200 per adult for a hotel buffet to around QAR 1,000 per person at the top fine-dining galas, with VIP tables and a few tasting menus going higher. Some hotels offered early-bird discounts for bookings made before mid or late December.
Ticketed concerts and festivals
There is also a small adult events scene. For the night welcoming 2026, an outdoor electronic music festival was held at Doha Golf Club from 8pm, open to over-18s only with a valid Qatar ID or passport, according to QIC. Similar events are usually announced in December through ticketing sites such as Virgin Megastore and Platinumlist.
New Year’s Eve with kids
Qatar is an easy place to celebrate with children. The main public event is explicitly aimed at families, the entertainment starts early, and many hotels price their buffets for children. A few ideas that work well:
- The early shows at Lusail. The laser and projection shows on the Plaza Towers began at 6pm in both of the last two years. Watch a couple of rounds, eat, and leave before the crowds build towards midnight.
- A family hotel buffet. Several hotels listed child prices for the night welcoming 2026, and Sharq Village & Spa advertised kids’ entertainment at its gala. Some include a midnight countdown, so children can stay up without being squeezed in a crowd.
- Souq Waqif and Katara in the evening. Both are busy, safe and stroller-friendly in the main areas, with plenty of space for children to walk.
- A park picnic before dark. Al Bidda Park has playgrounds and long lawns, and is open until midnight on its usual schedule.
If you do take small children to Lusail at midnight, bring ear defenders for the fireworks, agree a meeting point in case you are separated, and write your phone number on a wristband or card in their pocket. More ideas are in our guide to Qatar with kids.
Desert and camping on New Year’s Eve
For many residents, the best New Year’s Eve in Qatar is not in the city at all, but around a campfire in the dunes. Winter is camping season, and the night sky away from Doha’s lights is a very different way to see in the year.

Licensed desert camps
The easiest option is a night at a licensed camp around Sealine, south of Mesaieed, where the dunes meet the sea. Camps such as Regency Sealine Camp offer tents, dinners and activities like dune bashing and camel rides, and QIC’s guide to the night welcoming 2026 described desert-safari packages that end with a Bedouin-style dinner and a campfire countdown. Packages and prices change every season, so book directly and ask what the New Year’s Eve programme includes. Our desert safari guide explains how tours work, and Sealine Beach covers the area itself.
Overnight tours and the Inland Sea
Some operators run overnight trips to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea on the Saudi border. The drive needs a proper 4×4 and experienced dune driving, so an organised tour is the sensible choice for most people, especially at night.
Camping season rules
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change sets the camping season each year. The 2025–26 season ran from 15 October 2025 to 15 April 2026, and long-stay seasonal camp permits were limited to Qatari nationals. At the start of October 2026 the details of the 2026–27 season had not yet been published. Our camping in Qatar guide tracks the latest rules, registration and safety advice.
Whatever you do, never light a fire directly on the sand, take every bit of rubbish home, and leave fireworks to the official shows. Do not attempt dune driving after dark if you are not experienced, and tell someone where you are going.
Getting there and back
Transport is the single biggest factor in whether your night goes smoothly. Hundreds of thousands of people head for one district, roads around the boulevard are closed, and everyone wants to leave at 12.15am.
By Doha Metro (recommended)
Take the Red Line north to Lusail QNB, the last station on the line, which is a short walk from the boulevard. Qatar Rail extended hours in both recent years:
- Night welcoming 2025: Doha Metro and Lusail Tram ran until 2am, according to The Peninsula.
- Night welcoming 2026: the last train from Lusail QNB left at 2.22am, and the last train with connections to the Gold and Green lines at 2.07am, as announced by Qatar Rail and reported by The Peninsula on 31 December 2025.
Expect long but managed queues at Lusail QNB after midnight. If you are not in a hurry, wait 30 to 45 minutes for the first rush to clear.
Lusail Tram
Do not count on the tram. On 31 December 2025 Qatar Rail closed the Pink Line from 2pm until the end of service, closed the Turquoise Line completely, and ran the Orange Line only between Legtaifiya and Al Wessil from around midday. The same pattern may apply again, so check Qatar Rail’s announcements on the day.
Driving and parking
Private parking near the boulevard is limited, and roads leading to it close for the event. For the night welcoming 2026, Lusail City directed drivers to two designated areas, with shuttle buses running from 3pm:
- Al Wadi Parking (yellow zones) for visitors arriving via Al Khor Coastal Road or the Lusail Expressway.
- Al Kharayej Parking (yellow zones) for visitors from western Doha, via Exit 29A on Al Khor Coastal Road.
Parking in unauthorised areas was warned to result in violations. Al Majlis ticket holders had reserved parking. Allow extra time to leave, because shuttles and car parks empty slowly after midnight.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Designated taxi pick-up and drop-off points were set up near the boulevard in 2025. Ride-hailing prices and waiting times rise sharply around midnight, and drivers often cannot get close. Walking to the metro is usually faster.
Timing your night
Based on the last two programmes, a sensible plan for Lusail looks like this:
- 3pm onwards: shuttle buses start from the designated car parks (2025 schedule).
- Around 5pm: sunset is shortly before 5pm at the end of December, and public access opened at 5pm in 2025.
- 6pm: laser and projection shows begin on the Plaza Towers.
- 7.30pm to 10pm: live music and performances. Eat by now; restaurants on the boulevard fill early.
- By 10pm: be in your viewing spot if the midnight show is your priority.
- Midnight: countdown, fireworks and pyrodrones.
- Midnight to 2am: entertainment continued until 2am in 2025, which helps spread out departures.
For hotel events, most dinners started between 7pm and 8.30pm for the night welcoming 2026, with parties running to 1am or 2am.
Weather on New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve is in the coolest part of Qatar’s year. Average temperatures in Doha are a low of about 17°C and a high of about 25°C in December, and a low of about 14.5°C and a high of about 22.5°C in January, according to Climates to Travel. By midnight on an open boulevard or in the desert it can feel properly chilly, especially if the wind is up.
Rain is rare but most of it falls between December and April, usually as short showers. A heavy downpour can flood underpasses and desert tracks, so check the Qatar Meteorology Department forecast on the day. For more on the season, see our guide to things to do in Qatar in winter.
Rules and etiquette
New Year’s Eve in Qatar is festive but family-oriented, and the public celebrations are alcohol-free. A few rules matter more than usual on a night like this.
Alcohol
Only licensed hotels, restaurants and bars can sell alcohol, and the legal drinking age is 21. The UK government’s travel advice states that it is illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in public in Qatar, with penalties of up to six months in prison or a fine of up to QAR 3,000. That means no drinks on the boulevard, on the beach, in the car park or in a taxi on the way home. Hotels may ask for ID at the door of bars and drinks packages.
Dress
Cover your shoulders and knees in public places. That applies to the boulevard, malls, souqs and the metro, whatever you plan to wear later at a hotel party. Hotel galas set their own dress codes, often smart or themed, so check before you go. A light layer is useful anyway for the cool night.
Behaviour in the crowd
- Keep physical affection discreet: UK travel advice warns that intimacy in public can lead to arrest.
- Swearing and rude gestures are treated as obscene acts, and are taken especially seriously when directed at police or officials.
- Do not photograph or film strangers, particularly women and children, without permission. Sharing images of people without their consent can be an offence under Qatari law.
- Follow the instructions of police and crowd stewards, and use the marked entrances and exits even if a short cut looks quicker.
- Respect the families-only arrangements if they apply, and do not try to talk your way past the stewards.
What to bring
- Qatar ID or passport (needed for age-restricted events and sometimes at hotel bars).
- A light jacket or fleece for the evening, and comfortable shoes for hours of standing and walking.
- A charged phone and a power bank: you will use maps, tickets and the camera more than usual.
- A Doha Metro travel card topped up in advance, to avoid ticket machine queues on the way home.
- Water and a small snack, especially with children.
- Ear defenders for babies and young children.
- A small bag only: large bags slow you down at security checks and in the crowd.
- For the desert: warm layers, a torch or head torch, a rubbish bag, and a fully charged phone with your location shared.

Mistakes to avoid
- Driving to Lusail and hoping to park nearby. Roads close and private parking is limited. Use the metro or the designated car parks and shuttles.
- Relying on the Lusail Tram. Most lines were closed or shortened on the last New Year’s Eve.
- Arriving at 11.30pm. By then entrances and good viewing areas are packed, and you may be held back by crowd control.
- Assuming last year’s rules apply. Entry rules (such as families-only), timings, parking zones and metro hours are announced each year, usually in the last week of December.
- Underdressing for the cold. Mid-teens at midnight feels cold after a hot autumn.
- Booking a “fireworks view” without checking. Ask the venue what you will really see, and from where.
- Carrying alcohol in public or getting a taxi home drunk. Keep drinking inside licensed venues.
- Leaving the moment the show ends. The first half hour after midnight is the worst time to queue for the metro.
New Year’s Day in Doha
On 1 January 2027, a Friday, the city wakes up slowly. Many hotels run New Year’s Day breakfasts and brunches, as they did in 2026. It is also a good morning for a quiet Corniche walk or a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art, which normally opens on Fridays from 1.30pm. If you would rather start the year with a view, our guide to the best sunset spots in Qatar has ideas for the first evening of 2027.
